Mr. Somas APPAVOU was appointed CEO of Air Mauritius in July 2017. Having worked in key global markets, Somas has over 20 years’ of experience in the aviation industry. He holds a M. Phil Degree in Aerospace and Air Transport Economics from l‘Ecole Nationale de l’Aviation Civile’ and University of Toulouse as well as a Master Degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Bordeaux (France). He started his career in the Strategic Planning department of Air Mauritius. He then joined Airbus where he held leadership positons including Head of Supply Chain in Hamburg, Germany; Regional Sales Director for Subcontinent-India and Africa. From 2009 to 2017, he held the position of Senior Sales Director, Middle East and Africa at Airbus. In this capacity, Somas Appavou was in charge of expanding market presence and supporting the growth of established airlines as well as the development of new airlines in Africa, whereby he contributed largely to the growth of Airbus commercial reach. He was appointed member of the executive committee of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) in November 2018 for a period of three years.

Somas Appavou is well versed in business development, industrial partnerships as well as global functional support. Holder of multiple awards in Innovative Aircraft Financing Structure, Process Improvement and Aircraft Economics, Somas is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt and a passionate pilot having obtained his license in 1999.

Mr. Abderahmane Berthe is the Secretary General of African Airlines Association. He took office on 01 January 2018.

Mr Berthe was the CEO of Air Mali and Air Burkina. He has 28 years’ experience in airline industry and a total of 16 years as an airline CEO.

Mr Berthe built his career in various Airlines and multicultural environment both in Europe and Africa at positions such as aircraft performance and dispatch engineering, maintenance and operations quality, ground operations and Chief Executive Officer.

Abdérahmane is graduated from:

  • French Civil Aviation school in Toulouse (1987 Master Of Science degree).
  • French Aeronautical and Space school in Toulouse (1988 Master Of Science degree)

Alexandre de Juniac
Director General and CEO - IATA
Alexandre de Juniac became the seventh person to lead the International Air Transport Association (IATA) when he took on the role of Director General and CEO from 1 September 2016.

De Juniac has almost three decades of experience in both the private and public sectors. This includes senior positions in the airline and aerospace industries and the French government.

De Juniac served as Chairman and CEO of Air France-KLM (2013-2016) and prior to that as Chairman and CEO of Air France (2011-2013). Under de Juniac’s leadership Air France and Air France-KLM underwent a successful restructuring that improved efficiency and strengthened performance. He has also served on the IATA Board of Governors (2013-2016).

De Juniac has broad aviation sector experience, including 14 years at French aerospace, space, defense, security and transportation company Thales, and its predecessor companies Thompson-CSF and Thompson SA (1995-2009). In his last position at Thales, de Juniac was responsible for the company’s operations and sales in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

De Juniac has also held positions in the French government. His career began with the Conseil d’Etat (State Council) from 1988 to 1993. Subsequently, he served in the Department of Budget (1993-1995); and in the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Employment as Chief of Staff to then Minister Christine Lagarde (2009-2011).
A French citizen, de Juniac was born in 1962. He is a graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique de Paris and Ecole Nationale de l’Administration.

Mr. Barry Kashambo joined ICAO ESAF as Regional Director in March 2015 and has been in international civil aviation community for over 35 years with a background of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and Flight Safety Standards specifically Airworthiness Inspection.

He worked with the Civil Aviation Authority Uganda as Airworthiness surveyor/Inspector and Accident Investigator for a period of 21 years (1988-2009). He also served as Aviation safety officer for UN MONUSCO (2009-2012) performing oversight and accident/incident investigation for the fleet biggest UN mission fleet at the time.

Mr. Kashambo worked as the Executive Director of East African Community- Civil Aviation Safety and Security Agency, (CASSOA), a Regional safety and Security Oversight Organisation for the East African Region, that has successfully steered the development of harmonised regulations, technical guidance materials, common examinations, sharing of resources and promotion of regional approach to aviation related matters among others-(2012-2015).

Barry Kashambo holds a Masters Degree in Aviation safety Management from City University London among other professional qualifications and is a member of International Society of safety Investigators (ISASI). He is a devout Christian and married with Children.

Aaron is the latest arrival at AFRAA having joined us in May, 2019. He comes to AFRAA with a wealth of knowledge and experience of aviation in Africa where he was the Regional General Manager - Africa & Middle East, for South African Airways. He has been with SAA for more than 20 years and has spent this time in the Africa and Middle East region in various positions. His career in the aviation industry spans almost 40 years and he is passionate about the development and growth of African aviation in general and cherishes the opportunity to play a role in AFRAA..

Aaron rose through the ranks at SAA in various roles in South Africa, UAE and later in Nigeria where he served as SAA Country Manager for four years. During that time, Aaron’s passion for developing and growing the SAA brand was insatiable and he motivated for the establishment of the Dakar route. He also motivated and obtained buy-in for the first ever commercial agreement between African airlines, which enabled SAA and Nigeria Airways to cooperate on the Lagos to New York route, which proved to be a very successful venture.

Demand for his experience and knowledge of the continent saw Aaron take senior positions, such as Executive Manager for East Africa & West Africa, where he coordinated the growth and expansion of SAA’s footprint in countries such as Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. He took up the challenge of Regional Manager for North, West and Central Africa where he managed the commencement of services to Gabon and Cameroon. He further proposed and led the negotiation with various host governments for the introduction of intra-African operations, such as Libreville to Douala as well as Libreville to Cotonou and the Accra to Abidjan route. Aaron and his team have been the force behind the establishment of several new SAA routes in Africa and they are proud to have ensured the success of the SAA relationship with Africa World Airlines in Ghana. An avid reader, Aaron enjoys Coaching and Mentoring young Aviators and is keen to ensure that the African aviation sector continues to develop the youth into the leaders of the industry.

J. Miguel Santos directs Boeing activities in all African countries except the Maghreb countries in Northern Africa. He manages Boeing relationships with government entities, customers, suppliers, business partners and other stakeholders; seeks mutually beneficial partnerships and business opportunities for Boeing; and supports the activities of Boeing business units in Africa. He also serves as Boeing Commercial Airplanes sales director for all Southern Africa countries including Angola, South Africa, Réunion and Mozambique. He is based in Johannesburg, South Africa and reports to both Sir Michael Arthur, president of Boeing International and to Omar Arekat, Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ senior vice president of Sales for Africa, Middle East and Turkey.

Santos has been with Boeing for over 40 years. He began his career in 1979 as an engineer and scientist at Douglas Aircraft Company. In 1984, he joined Boeing Commercial Airplanes and was assigned as area manager for Airline Analysis. He also served as an account manager and sales program manager for Africa Sales. His experience also includes positions as manager of 747/767 Sales Support Engineering, 747/767 marketing manager for Asia and manager of the 767FX/747FX and 747-500X/-600X Marketing Requirements programs. He was director of International Sales, first responsible for Pakistan, Bangladesh and Bhutan in Asia; Cabo Verde, São Tomé e Príncipe, Angola, Mozambique and Mauritius in Africa; and later for South Africa and the rest of the Southern Africa Development Community countries.

Santos earned Bachelor of Science degrees in aeronautical and astronautical engineering and geological sciences from the University of Washington, an MBA from Pepperdine University, a master’s degree in naval command and staff from the Naval War College and a Master of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Lisbon. He is also a graduate of the Naval War College and Joint Forces Staff College.
Santos holds the rank of commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, now retired. He began his military career in 1984 as a DC-9 maintenance mechanic. In 1987, he was commissioned as an officer. He held positions in various engineering units, such as the Naval Air Systems Command, and in force squadrons as line division officer, quality control officer, maintenance officer, training officer, and assistant program manager for Aircraft Maintenance Programs and Policies. He has received two Navy Achievement Medals, a Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Meritorious Service Medal, and was named Reserve Officer of the Year in 1999.

Santos is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS), and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in the US and a chartered engineer (CEng) in the U.K. He is a member of the RAeS Air Transportation Board in the United Kingdom, was a member of the Export-Import Bank’s Sub-Saharan Africa Advisory Committee, is a member of the board of the Corporate Council on Africa and a member of the board of the American Chamber of Commerce in South Africa. Recently invited to become a member of the Industry Engineering Advisory Council at Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has lectured at Cranfield University and various RAeS branches.
An American who was born in Portugal and raised in Angola, Santos speaks Portuguese, French and Spanish and he reads and understands Italian.

Mr. Gaoussou KONATE

Mr. KONATE joined AFRAA just after he completed a nine-month consultancy contract with the African Development Bank and contributed to the development of the Bank Framework and Guidelines to Support the Aviation Sector in the Region. He brings a vast experience comprising both air transport and civil aviation. His 35-year-corporate experience covered: International Civil Organisation (ICAO), he served as Deputy Regional Director of the Western and Central; for 8 years, he serviced IATA Regional Office for Africa and Indian Ocean (AFI) where he joined as Manager Safety and became Regional Director Safety, Operations, and Infrastructure; as AFRAA Technical Director, he fostered cooperation among African air carriers for 11 years. Before AFRAA, he worked at Air Afrique for just over a decade.


Mr. KONATE graduated as a Mechanical Engineer in 1979 at the “Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon,” in France.

Sebastian Mikosz is the Group Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Airways. He’s also a Non-Executive Board Member of two Kenya Airways subsidiaries, the regional operator Jambojet and the Tanzanian operator Precision Air. Sebastian took his position on 1st June 2017.

Prior to that that he was the CEO of eSKY Group - the largest Polish Online Travel Agent, operating in 10 countries both in Europe and South America. Sebastian is also the former Chief Executive Officer of LOT Polish Airlines. He held this position twice in the years 2009-2015. From 2011 to 2013 Sebastian worked as Senior Advisor to Societe Generale Corporate Investment Bank, in between his two terms as CEO of LOT.

He started his career with Arthur Andersen office in Paris, where he specialized in investments in the emerging markets. After returning to Poland in 2000 he worked on establishing the online brokerage house in Poland. A year later he became a Managing Director of the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Poland (CCIFP). Between July 2003 – September 2006 Sebastian was Vice-President of the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIiIZ). As a governmental agency PAIiIZ was in charge of attracting foreign investors to Poland.

Before joining LOT Polish Airlines in years 2007–09 he held the position of Director in Deloitte Business Consulting Warsaw Office.
Sebastian is bilingual in French and fluent speaker of English and Russian in addition to his native Polish. He’s 45 and graduate of the Institute of Political Studies (IEP Paris) in France with a master’s degree in Economics and Finance. He’s married and has three sons.

Sanjeev S Gadhia is the Founder and CEO of Astral Aviation Ltd which is a dedicated all- cargo airline based in Nairobi, Kenya and operates a fleet of seven cargo aircrafts into Europe and within Africa.

Operating one of the most successful airlines in Africa for 18 years, Sanjeev is responsible for the overall management, network planning and fleet acquisition for Astral Aviation, along with its Pan African expansion strategy, which entails two new cargo hubs in West and Southern Africa, including diversification into Logistics, Airport Infrastructure, Executive Jets and Unmanned Cargo Aircrafts.

Sanjeev is rated as a “New Generation Leader for Africa” by the prestigious African Leadership Network, while Astral has been rated as the best all-cargo carrier in Africa in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2018. In 2017, Astral Aerial (UAV subsidiary of Astral Aviation) won the prestigious IATA Cargo Innovation Award for its UTM (UAV Traffic Management) innovation for Africa.

In September 2016, Sanjeev was appointed Vice Chairman of AFRAA’s (African Airlines Association) Cargo Committee based on his extensive experience in the aircargo sector in Africa. In October 2017, Sanjeev became the first Director from Africa to sit on TIACA (The International Air Cargo Association)

A banker by profession, Sanjeev has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the Schiller International University in London, in addition to being a member of EO Kenya (Entrepreneurs Organization) and YPO (Young Professional’s Organization) Africa Great Lakes.

Rui Carreira is the current Chief Executive Officer of TAAG Angola Airlines.

He holds a degree in Law from Universidade Lusíada de Angola, a Master's degree in Corporate Finance from INSEEC, Paris and a Post-Graduate degree in Business Management (AESE/IESE, Lisbon/Madrid).

He was an Angolan Air Force pilot and TAAG commercial pilot in the 1990s and later an executive pilot at Sonangol Aeronáutica. He was also a flight instructor in Luanda and an aeronautical researcher, after been trained in this area in Brazil in 2000.

Mr. Carreira also held the position of President of the Pilots Association of Angola.

In 2008 he was invited by the then Angolan Minister of Transport to join TAAG Board of Directors, where he remained until 2013 as Executive Director.

After his position as TAAG Board Director, in 2013 Mr. Carreira was appointed Deputy Director General of Angola’s Civil Aviation Authority (INAVIC) and later became Director General.

In mid-2017 he returned to TAAG as member of its interim Management Committee and in September 2018 was appointed CEO of the Angolan flag carrier, a position he currently holds.”

Abdelhamid Addou was appointed as Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Royal Air Maroc in February 2016.

Mr. Addou is also Executive Committee member of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) and the Arab Air Carriers Organization (AACO).

Mr. Addou is Civil Engineer, Master’s Degree, graduated from Ecole Mohammadia d’Ingenieurs, class of 1997.

An alumnus of the University of Cambridge, she is a catalyst of change, a transformative thought leader and influencer, positively impacting lives and the business environment through her passion, work and initiatives. She is focused on bringing value, best practices and international standards to sectors, industries, businesses and government, through her work and career spanning 20 years. She is a lawyer, advocate and global aviation expert.

In her current role as Regional Director, Advocacy & Strategic Relations for Africa at the International Air Transportation Association (IATA), Adefunke advocates for the sustainability and growth of the aviation industry across the region, highlighting its value to economies and societies as an enabler and catalyst for development and growth, and a force for social good. Adefunke is responsible for conceptualising and delivering an ongoing campaign regarding the transformation of Africa’s socio-economic prospects through improved air connectivity across the continent, resulting in the launch of the Single African Air Transport Market by African Heads of State in January 2018, which could translate to billions of dollors in GDP and thousands of jobs for Africa. She is IATA’s focal point for its implementation across the continent.

African Union Commission (AUC)
Eric Ntagengerwa is currently Senior Policy Officer-Air Transport under infrastructure and Energy Department of the African Union Commission. His role includes mainly the coordination of various Air Transport projects and programmes at continental level including the operationalization of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) which is one of the 12 flagship projects of African Union Agenda 2063.

Prior to his appointment at African Union Commission, he was the Principal Civil Aviation Officer at East African Community (EAC) where he coordinated the development and implementation of a seamless upper airspace project and a regional framework on Partner States cooperation in handling Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigations, among many other regional projects. He previously served as Head of transport planning at Rwanda Transport Development Agency. Mr Eric Ntagengerwa is a Civil Engineer by profession. He holds a Masters Degree in transportation Management and an IATA certificate in Managing Policy and Regulation in Civil Aviation.

Mr. Anderson assumed the position of Head of EMEA in January 2019 having previously held the Head of APAC role since the acquisition of ILFC in May 2014. In his role Mr. Anderson is responsible for AerCap’s leasing activities across Europe, Middle East and Africa. Prior to joining AerCap he worked in the leasing team at ILFC where he set up ILFC’s Asia Pacific office in 2012.

A veteran of GE with over 30 years of experience, Isam is responsible for driving growth of GE Aviation in Africa by developing and expanding customer relationships and long term public and private partnerships across the region. He transferred to GE's Aviation business in 2010 with a diverse global background in general management, sales, service and engineering in a number GE divisions. He was the General Manager for GE Energy Services and also led GE Healthcare’s operations in the Middle East and Africa markets after spending 15 years at the GE Energy business in various commercial positions. Isam holds a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering  from Cairo University, Egypt and a MBA from the American University  in Cairo.

As Executive VP Airlines for Amadeus in the Middle East, Turkey & Africa (META), Maher is responsible for all commercial activities with Amadeus’ airline customers based in the region. This includes a responsibility to lead Amadeus’ relationships with aviation stakeholders in the market. He joined Amadeus in 2014 and currently oversees all countries in the META region as well as Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Under his leadership, the regional Amadeus Airline team achieved some of its best results in terms of business growth and customer centricity. Leveraging over 20 years of aviation industry experience, Maher’s leadership is seen across business operations, consulting, sales, client management and product development.

His current professional goal is to support and enable Amadeus airline customers in the region to pursue growth, enhance the customer experience, and accelerate digital transformation not only through technology but through a close collaboration and partnership. Dino Gelmetti brings almost 20 years of technology leadership to his role of Vice President, Middle East and Africa (MEA) for Sabre Travel Solutions, a global technology company that offers a broad range of software and data solutions to help airlines market themselves, sell products, serve customers and operate more efficiently.

Joining Sabre in February 2015, Dino was initially responsible for the overall performance in EMEA of the Sabre Airline Solutions business, and now leads the Middle East and Africa region for Sabre Travel Solutions with a dedicated focus on helping airlines achieve their business and technology goals in this fast-growing aviation market.

Previously, Dino served as Global Sales Director for technology services provider and integrator Xchanging Plc, and as Director of Global Services (EMEA) at technology company EMC Corporation.

In his role at EMC, Dino successfully managed a portfolio of leading banking and telecommunications businesses, and led the implementation of a go-to-market strategy for EMC’s services across EMEA in the fast-moving fields of cloud computing, security and big data.

Dino has a wealth of experience within the technology sector, having also spent a large proportion of his career with worldwide information technology services company, Unisys. Dino was instrumental in achieving a high increase in sales across the EMEA region as well as significantly expanding the organisation’s pipeline.
Dino started his career at Ernst and Young’s Australia-based distribution subsidiary, EYCT, where he held a marketing role, driving campaigns towards major accounts and prospects.

His strong commercial experience within the technology services and solutions industry gives him a solid perspective that is well-matched to driving Sabre’s continued growth and expansion in the Middle East and Africa region.

Mark Dunnachie is the ATR Head of Region for Europe, Middle East, Africa & Russia, with overall responsibility for commercial, sales and primary customer relationships in the region. Mark Joined ATR in October 2018 from the role of CCO at AerFin, a UK based company involved in aircraft and parts trading. His career to date spans over 28 years of experience in the industry having formerly been with Embraer for 17 years where his responsibilities included new aircraft sales in EMEA, Managing Director of ECC Leasing (Embraer’s Asset Management Company) and as Head of Lessor Sales EMEA. His last role in Embraer was as Vice President Asia Pacific based out of Singapore.

Mark has also worked and lived in Rotterdam, Paris, Dublin and London. He is now based in Toulouse. Prior to joining Embraer he worked at BAE Systems for 10 years in a wide range of executive positions covering Market Planning, Business Development and Sales in an equally varied range of markets from Asia Pacific, through Europe, the CIS, Africa and North America. He was also actively involved in the then JV between ATR and BAE; AIR International. He started his career in 1989 where he was involved in the set up and launch of a small private scheduled Dutch airline. He is a former Trustee of the ISTAT Foundation, he holds a BSc degree in Maritime Commerce from the University of Wales Cardiff and is married with 2 sons.

Brendan Sobie has been working in the aviation industry for over 20 years as a writer, analyst and consultant. Raul Villaron was appointed Vice-President Sales Africa & Middle East for Embraer Commercial Aviation in January 2018. Based in Amsterdam, his role oversees all Sales and Marketing activities in the region, with satellite offices in South Africa and Dubai under his responsibility.

Prior to that, Raul was the Marketing Director for Embraer Commercial Aviation, covering Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
